The Importance of Self-Care for Mental Health Professionals

As a professional, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the weight of your clients' burdens. But it's essential that we prioritize our own well-being in order to best serve others. In this podcast episode, Hampton Roads real estate professionals, Donavan McFadden and Roger Lee, sit down with, Brandon and Shannon, two therapists with Hope Family Support Services, a growing mental health practice with two offices servicing the 757 to discuss the importance of professionals taking self-care.

Brandon mentions the growing need for mental health services in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, with more and more people seeking help in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. Meanwhile, Shannon stresses the importance of finding healthy coping mechanisms to handle the stress of trying to find a professional work/life balance. She shares some of her own self-care routines, such as therapy, massages, facials, cooking, gardening, spending time with her daughter, and listening to vinyl records. She also speaks about the importance of taking breaks and disconnecting, when necessary, even if it's just for a few days.

The takeaway from this podcast episode is that it's okay to prioritize your own mental health as a mental health professional. It's not selfish, but rather a necessary step in being able to effectively help others.
